The series began in 2009 with Lavie Tidhar and Apex Publications putting the focus on global science fiction by showcasing authors from Africa, Latin American, Asia, and Europe. The fourth volume of World SF is back with incredible new stories, a new editor in Mahvesh Murad, and a sleek new cover design.
Now firmly established as the benchmark anthology series of international speculative fiction, volume 4 of The Apex Book of World SF sees debut editor Mahvesh Murad bring fresh new eyes to her selection of stories. From Spanish steampunk and Italian horror to Nigerian science fiction and subverted Japanese folktales, from love in the time of drones to teenagers at the end of the world, the stories in this volume showcase the best of contemporary speculative fiction, wherever it’s written.

The brief was ‘please rebrand these science fiction wonders with something simple, iconic, classy and, well, science fiction-y’. So something clean, crisp and, honestly?, not particularly a traditional science fiction cover.
It was loads of fun picking out four iconic images to use which represented SF and editor of book four, Mahvesh Murad – showing excellent good taste! – wanted a flying saucer on her edition. How could anybody say no, right? I tried to be really bold with the design, something you can pick out at a hundred meters and hopefully keeping them all on the same template makes it very clear you have a series on your hands here!
There’s a wonderful selection of authors who’ve contributed to these – the new volume includes Kuzhali Manickavel, Yukimi Ogawa, Rocío Rincón Fernández, Chinelo Onwualu, Deepak Unnikrishnan, Elana Gomel, Saad Z. Hossain, Haralambi Markov, Nene Ormes, Samuel Marolla, Prathibha Nadeeshani Dissanayake, Sese Yane, Dilman Dila, Isabel Yap, Swabir Silayi, Sabrina Huang, Vajra Chandrasekera, Zen Cho, Tang Fei, Julie Novakova, JY Yang, Natalia Theodoridou, Thomas Olde Heuvelt, Shimon Adaf, Usman T. Malik, Johann Thorsson, Bernardo Fernández and Celeste Rita Baker. And you can fins out all the detais plus how to order over at Tor.com!
