Bookman Trilogy Reissues

THE BOOKMAN TRILOGY REISSUES FROM ANGRY ROBOT!

[column_one_fourth][drop_cap style=”color:#999;”]L[/drop_cap]avie Tidhar‘s The Bookman Trilogy, which comprises of The Bookman, Camera Obscura and The Great Game gets a nice summer reissue this year![/column_one_fourth]

[column_three_fourths_last][drop_cap style=”color:#999;”]T[/drop_cap]he lovely folk at Angry Robot were nice enough to ask me to work on the designs. And hey, when there’s Lizard Kings, swashbuckling pirates, secret government agencies and airships involved? I really don’t need to be asked twice.

Over at the wonderful Tor.com I share the design process and explain how I fought the impulse to overload the covers with to much cool stuff, battled with tripods, struggled with Steampunk and made some very tricky decision about cogs. [/column_three_fourths_last]

There’s a problem illustrating The Bookman trilogy. The problem with illustrating the The Bookman trilogy? Well, there’s actually way too much good stuff in there. Space probes, giant lizards, secret government agencies, tripods and airships, all set in a crazy, alternate Victorian Britain. That’s artistic catnip for me and it was really difficult not to go on a wild artistic binge. But the brief was “minimal, cool an’ classy,” so, despite the vast amount of fun stuff to work with, keeping the pixels to a minimum was in order. And, erm… probably for the best before everything ended up with like thousand of zeppelins on it!

Lavie Tidhar. Tel Aviv Dossiers.

And Tea Stains.

Into the city of Tel Aviv the whirlwinds come, and nothing will ever be the same.

Through a city torn apart by a violence they cannot comprehend, three disparate people—a documentary film-maker, a yeshiva student, and a psychotic fireman—must try to survive, and try to find meaning: even if it means being lost themselves. As Tel Aviv is consumed, a strange mountain rises at the heart of the city, and shows the outline of what may be another, alien world beyond. Can there be redemption there? Can the fevered rumours of a coming messiah be true?

As the city loses contact with the outside world and closes in on itself, as the few surviving children play and scavenge in the ruins, can innocence survive, and is it possible for hope to spring amid such chaos?

A potent mixture of biblical allusions, Lovecraftian echoes, science fiction and contemporary culture, The Tel Aviv Dossier is part supernatural thriller, part meditation on the nature of belief—an original and involving novel painted on a vast canvas in which, beneath the despair, humour is never absent.

And it needs a new cover.

Well, that’s very kind of Aunty Fox to say so but ten books? TEN BOOKS? That’s a lotta pixels. Exciting an’ scary… in equal measure. And when so many authors are going to be spending so much time scribbling away for these anthologies? I feel the least I can do is try and give them a snappy package for their work to be showcased in.
