Bookman Trilogy Reissues

THE BOOKMAN TRILOGY REISSUES FROM ANGRY ROBOT!

Lavie Tidhar‘s The Bookman Trilogy, which comprises of The Bookman, Camera Obscura and The Great Game gets a nice summer reissue this year!

The lovely folk at Angry Robot were nice enough to ask me to work on the designs. And hey, when there’s Lizard Kings, swashbuckling pirates, secret government agencies and airships involved? I really don’t need to be asked twice.

Over at the wonderful Tor.com I share the design process and explain how I fought the impulse to overload the covers with to much cool stuff, battled with tripods, struggled with Steampunk and made some very tricky decision about cogs.

There’s a problem illustrating The Bookman trilogy. The problem with illustrating the The Bookman trilogy? Well, there’s actually way too much good stuff in there. Space probes, giant lizards, secret government agencies, tripods and airships, all set in a crazy, alternate Victorian Britain. That’s artistic catnip for me and it was really difficult not to go on a wild artistic binge. But the brief was “minimal, cool an’ classy,” so, despite the vast amount of fun stuff to work with, keeping the pixels to a minimum was in order. And, erm… probably for the best before everything ended up with like thousand of zeppelins on it!

I Demand A Magnetic Corset

Design Steampunk posters for a Forbidden Planet promotion? Why, yes I’d love to. So whilst digitally stumbling about for a bit of inspiration I found the mighty handy Advertising Archives. It’s a huge collection of promotional graphics from the pre-1900s onwards. Awesome. If you need to fake-up anything, from Art Deco travel posters to 1950s bad girl crime books, this is the very place to start.
